Anne Nesbet

Anne Nesbet’s novels for young readers are filled with adventure, friendship, and richly imagined worlds. Her first three novels for children (The Cabinet of Earths, A Box of Gargoyles, and The Wrinkled Crown) are set in magical or half-magical worlds. Her fourth novel, Cloud and Wallfish (Candlewick 2016), about children navigating the borders of East Berlin in 1989, won the California Book Award and was named an ALA Notable book. Anne’s fifth book, The Orphan Band of Springdale (Candlewick 2018), relates the adventures of a girl and her French horn in rural Maine in 1941. Daring Darleen, Queen of the Screen (Candlewick 2020)—about the adventures of two intrepid girls in the silent film era—received four starred reviews! In V is for Victorine (Candlewick 2023), we get to travel with our movie-making friends to Hollywood in 1915. When not writing novels for kids, Anne teaches film history, plays violin and viola, and goes on long hikes in the mountains. She reads while walking, by the way, which means she relies on echolocation (or chance) to avoid injury. She lives with her entertaining family and demanding dog in California.
