What do you think, publishing world? Do we have time for ONE more book deal before 2012 pulls up its covers and says goodnight? I think SO! There's been a lot of talk in the news over recent months about the topic of bullying, and that makes K.A. Holt's remarkable new middle-grade novel in verse especially timely and pertinent. POETRY BANDIT tells the story of Kevin, a seventh-grader who starts the year as a troubled bully but finds the tables turned on him when his former victim discovers Kevin's secret weakness—and the bully himself becomes a victim. A gorgeous and moving story of friendship, family, and the power of the written word, this is a beautiful book that you won't want to miss. I'm delighted to say that POETRY BANDIT has found its perfect home with Chronicle Books and the magnificent Tamra Tuller. Publication is scheduled for Fall 2014. Congratulations, Kari, and may this good news and more sail us swiftly into 2013! —Joan |
Sometimes deals take an extra-long time to be ready to announce—and such is the case with Deborah Underwood's newest announcement, for a two-picture-book deal done just under a year ago! What could be better to send off the week before holiday break than a delicious deal, many months in the making and now finally able to be shared publicly? For those of you who have read and loved Trent Reedy's middle-grade novels WORDS IN THE DUST (Arthur A. Levine Books, 2010) and STEALING AIR (Arthur A. Levine Books, 2012), I am excited to tell you that you will soon be able to take your Reedy reading up to a whole new level, with Trent's first foray into the YA field, DIVIDED WE FALL is a three-book series set in an eerily near-future America, following a seventeen-year-old army reservist and his friends who become caught up in events beyond their control when internal unrest and government protests go one step too far, with disastrous and cataclysmically far-reaching consequences. This gripping series will begin with INCENDIARY, in spring 2014, and will be published by Arthur A. Levine Books, again with the fabulous Cheryl Klein at the helm. Believe me when I say that this is a series you will not want to miss. Huge congratulations, Trent! |

I love the feeling of sinking into a story, and finding that the characters and worlds which are created there feel just as real and alive as my own. That was undoubtedly the case when I became lost within the pages of Diane C. Mullen's remarkable debut, PIECES OF A WRECK. This middle-grade novel is written in spare, razor-sharp prose, and tells the story of Liam, a fourteen-year-old graffiti artist and tagger who lives in urban Minneapolis. Afraid that he is beginning to succumb to the lures of a local gang, Liam's mother sends him to spend the summer with a family friend in a tiny town in rural Michigan. What happens to Liam there, who he meets, and what he discovers about himself and his art, makes for a beautiful and moving story that is not easily forgotten. I'm so pleased and excited to say that PIECES OF A WRECK has found its perfect home at Charlesbridge, with editor Julie Ham at the helm. The book is slated for spring 2015. Huge congratulations, Diane! —Joan |
