May 2020

We’ve been doing a lot of packaging projects with Catbird Agency’s fantastic illustrators, and I’m so pleased at how this one played out! Jean Reidy and Joey Chou, who worked on THE SNOW IS DEEPER THAN MY BOOTS ARE HIGH and the forthcoming GROUP HUG together, are being reunited with WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN A BOOK ABOUT YOU? Harper snagged it and two additional books in an exciting auction earlier this year, and they are so eager, they’re planning to publish this in spring 2021! And esteemed editor Antonia Markiet is helming, with Megan Ilnitzki assisting, to make this whole thing even more outstanding.

Can’t WAIT to see this one on shelves! Congratulations, Jean!

We are so excited to be celebrating Suma Subramaniam's debut picture book deal! Here's what was announced in Children's Bookshelf last week - congratulations, Suma!

Hilary Van Dusen at Candlewick Press has acquired World rights, all languages to Suma Subramaniam’s debut picture book, Namaste is a Greeting, an exploration of Namaste through everyday observation and simple actions to honor the divine within all people. Sandhya Prabhat is set to illustrate for a Fall 2022 publication. Miranda Paul of Erin Murphy Literary Agency negotiated the deal on behalf of the author, the illustrator was represented by Alice Sutherland-Hawes of Madeleine Milburn Agency.

So here’s a hypothetical question: What if you were adorable. (I’m not saying you’re not! Don’t get me wrong.) But what if you were SO adorable—so impossibly superdupercute—that anybody who saw you would immediately, like, EXPLODE? (Literally. Explode.)

Just hypothetically, of course.

I mean, it’s kind of a tough problem to have, right? So now that we’re on the same page, you can understand the problem that’s faced by Fluffy, the main character of Stephen W. Martin’s newest and most forthcoming picture book:

Karen Wojtyla at McElderry Books has acquired World rights to Stephen W. Martin’s FLUFFY MCWHISKERS: CUTENESS EXPLOSION, about a little cat who is so incredibly cute that anyone who sees her will instantly explode (literally!), which makes it very difficult to find even one friend. Dan Tavis has signed on to illustrate. The deal was managed by Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency for the author, and Ginger Knowlton at Curtis Brown for the illustrator, for publication in Fall 2021.

Let me tell you, Stephen’s story and Dan Tavis’s illustrations are going to have you on the edge of your seat—the tension! The drama! The EXPLOSIONS! Ultimately, we are all going to have to wait until next year to properly do the subject justice. But I encourage you to mark your calendars in the meanwhile.

Huge (and super adorable!) congratulations, Stephen!!

He knows… AND he is willing to share his inside scoop. What a guy, right?

Yep – it’s no secret how important it is to have a good memory. From thinking back on fond former times (and aren’t just about ALL past-times fond right now, hmmm?) to recalling key information at a critical moment, our memory skills are something we need—and use—every single day. The stronger and sharper our memory, the more we can do with it. So why not build up that muscle right from the early years?

That was the indisputable train of logic that led to this spectacular new deal:

Daniel Nayeri at Odd Dot has acquired Jacob Sager Weinstein’s middle-grade nonfiction book, HOW TO REMEMBER EVERYTHING: TIPS AND TRICKS TO BECOME A MEMORY MASTER, a humorous, highly illustrated approach to boosting memory skills, which will walk kids step-by-step through the key techniques and a wide range of practical tips and tricks. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency did the deal for world rights. Publication will be in October 2020.

You read that right—it’s coming directly to your bookshelf THIS October. Which means it’s nowhere near too early to start getting excited *right now*! (Maybe call your bookstore for a preorder?? :))

Huge congrats, Jacob and team!

It’s a match made in heaven—which for me is a forest full of trees and tree hole homes.

Amy Hevron’s gorgeous textured and rich illustrations are perfect for Melissa’s expository nonfiction text, which beckons readers into the wonder that are trees. How many of us have tried to fit into a tree hole or peered into an opening in a tree trunk?

Ann Kelley at Random House Studio has acquired, at auction, world rights to Melissa Stewart's (l.) Tree Hole Home, a nonfiction picture book about various tree holes and the animals that inhabit them. Amy Hevron will illustrate; publication is scheduled for fall 2022. Tricia Lawrence at Erin Murphy Literary Agency represented the author, and Kirsten Hall at Catbird Productions represented the illustrator.

Congratulations, Melissa! We’re thrilled for you and Amy!

So excited to announce that Debbi Michiko Florence has written a sequel to KEEP IT TOGETHER, KEIKO CARTER and it’s headed our way in summer 2021.

Author of KEEP IT TOGETHER, KEIKO CARTER Debbi Michiko Florence's JUST BE COOL, JENNA SAKAI, in which a girl decides heartbreak is for suckers as she attempts to get over her first crush and her parents' divorce, to Jenne Abramowitz at Scholastic, in a two-book deal, for publication in summer 2021, by Tricia Lawrence at Erin Murphy Literary Agency (NA).

We love good news during this pandemic! We’re so excited for JUST BE COOL, JENNA SAKAI.

Congratulations, Debbi!

It is no secret that Maria Gianferrari loves dogs. In fact, she loves them so much that there’s a solid chance I have already written an announcement that begins this exact way. (Please don’t go back and check me on this!) But when the dog collar fits, you wear it—and this book we are celebrating today is not just any dog book. It’s one that comes directly from Maria’s heart, and into ours.

Here are the details, folks:

Emily Feinberg at Roaring Brook Press has acquired HAWK RISING and COYOTE MOON author Maria Gianferrari’s TO DOGS WITH LOVE, an ode of love and praise to our most faithful and loyal companions, with illustrations by Lucy Fleming. The author was represented by Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency, and the illustrator was represented by Frederica Dawson at the Bright Agency, in a deal for World rights. The book will publish in spring 2021.

That’s right—you read it here first! (Or first-ish.) This incredibly moving story is going to be a wonderful book, and will make a worthy addition to the Maria Gianferrari Dog Books Collection. (Have you started yours yet? If not, what are you waiting for??)

Congratulations, Maria!!
