Liz Garton Scanlon’s magical collaboration with Beach Lane Books continues! I can’t overstate what a pleasure it is when a client sends a new project, we dig in together and make it more wholly itself, send it to an editor already wanting to work with the client again, and have an offer within an hour or two. I mean, magic, right?

In this case, that magic was followed by a long pause as a just-right illustrator was wooed to the project. And so I am happy to share that Liz’s WOULD YOU COME TOO? will be illustrated by the divine Diana Sudyka (who recently did the illustrations for EMLA author Hayley Barrett’s WHAT MISS MITCHELL SAW) and published in spring 2022 by Andrea Welch at Beach Lane.

WOULD YOU COME TOO? is a celebration of imaginative children exploring the wonders of the natural world together. What could be better?!?

Ooh, it’s hard to wait for spring 2022!

Congrats, Liz!

Here’s something I bet you didn’t know about award-winning author Melanie Crowder: Many years ago, as a young person, she attended wildland fire school. Little did she know that several decades later, this experience would be the inspiration spark (so to speak!) for an incredible and powerful YA novel.

Fun fact: Smokejumpers are specially trained firefighters who are helicoptered to the site of remote wildland fires and parachute in to help with the firefighting response. Intense, right? So now, here’s that deal announcement you’ve been waiting for:

Liza Kaplan at Philomel has acquired Melanie Crowder’s next YA novel, Jumper, about a girl who spends the summer as one of the first teenage smokejumpers since the 1950s, until a catastrophic fire spirals out of control--with disastrous consequences. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency did the deal for World rights. Publication is slated for spring 2022.

I would be remiss if I did not take this most excellent opportunity to say: Congrats, Melanie… you are ON FIRE! :D

In these uncertain and troubling times, one thing we are all looking to hold onto are strong, true facts. And when you find someone who can package and deliver those facts in an appealing, engaging, accurate way—well, you hang on tight and you don’t let them go.

So maybe that’s why stellar author and science professional Sara Levine received an inquiry into her Inbox a few months ago. “How would you feel about writing book on germs?” Well, the answer to that question is the latest deal listing in Publishers Weekly:

Carol Hinz at Lerner/Millbrook has acquired Germs Up Close by Sara Levine, which brings together accessible text and eye-catching micrographs showing germs that cause various illnesses--including COVID-19. Additionally, the book includes key information about the immune system, vaccines, and ways we can all stay healthy. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency represented the author in the deal for world rights. Publication will be in spring 2021.

Congratulations, Sara! And we’re all awfully glad we won’t have to wait very long for this timely and essential book.

We’ve got great news to share today, from a fantastically versatile author—Trent Reedy, whose trilogy DIVIDED WE FALL foretold a scary second civil war; whose tech-thriller GAMER ARMY got pulses everywhere racing at top speed; and whose thoughtful contemporary IF YOU’RE READING THIS explored father-son relationships and the challenges of growing up.

Now we are ready to head in an entirely different direction: out into the wild!

Yes, my friends, it’s true—three new books in an action-packed MG series celebrating the great outdoors. What, I ask, could possibly be better reading as we come out of this time when the outdoors is one of our few actual constants?

Here is the deal announcement, for your perusal pleasure:

Simon Boughton at Norton Young Readers has acquired Gamer Army and Words in the Dust author Trent Reedy’s new outdoor sports and adventure series for middle graders. The three-book deal will begin publication in March 2021 with Hunter’s Choice, about a twelve-year-old boy setting out on his first deer hunt with his family, with the difficulties and dilemmas this brings. The second book will feature snowmobiling, and the third fishing. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency did the deal for World English rights.

There you have it – mark those calendars, and congratulations, Trent!!

This news went out for wider notice last week, but oh, what a week it’s been! In a world that is so hurting and so broken, it feels good to know that there are strong stories pushing their way out onto future shelves—stories that will not only entertain and delight (though that is a sure thing!), but that will also teach and help and heal. This book is one of those gems. This book is special.

Here is the exciting deal announcement:

Jessica Garrison at Dial has preempted World rights to Zack Loran Clark’s solo debut, THE LOCK-EATER. Pitched as in the vein of Diana Wynne Jones, this magical middle-grade adventure brings together a girl with an uncanny talent and a gearling who yearns for greater things, on a dangerous journey that will take all they have just to survive, and explores questions of friendship, sexual identity, and moral ambiguity along the way. The deal was brokered by Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Agency, and publication is planned for fall 2021.

This fantastic solo debut from Zack Loran Clark (whose co-written fantasy series, THE ADVENTURERS GUILD is well with checking out, if you haven’t already!) is classic middle-grade magic fare reinvented for today’s readers, with all the layers and complexity and diversity of our now. Don’t miss this book!

 Huge congratulations, Zack!
